About 7 years ago I took my then 8 year old daughter to see a production of the play 'Annie' and felt it would make the experience that much more fun if I made her an "Annie" dress to wear to the theater. So I sewed up a lovely red velveteen dress to look like Annie's iconic red dress from the movie and my daughter absolutely loved it. Fast forward to today and my two youngest girls are also Annie obesessed lately and there has been much begging and pleading to let them wear their big sister's Annnie dress, except the dress I sewed is a size 8 and my 5 year old, while desperate to wear it, has at least a year or more before the dress even begins to fit her, so it sits in her closet for now. I discovered though that I had a fair amount if the original red velveteen from that dress to sew up another outfit, so I went ahead and made an "Annie" inspired outfit for my 5 year old to wear in the meantime to school and to play in.
I made the pinafore in a size 6 using the 'Pembridge Pinafore' pattern by 'Lil Luxe Collection', sewing it up as directed without any changes except to add 2 inches to the hem for some growing room in the length so she can get more than one season out of it. I made the blouse to go with it using the 'Belle' pattern from Violette Field Threads and I made most of it as written except I added some piping to the collar and I added cuffs and black trim to the sleeves. Both pieces have a very classic and timeless look while being comfortable to wear. they were both a fairly straight forward sew and not too fussy.
